TORONTO (24 December, 2007) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing its investigation into the death of a 47-year-old Toronto man on December 22, 2007.

At 10:33 a.m. the Toronto Police Service (TPS) was called to Vanderbrent Cr. in regards to a man damaging property. The man fled the area on foot prior to the police arriving. Officers determined that the man had gone to a 16th floor apartment on Redgrave Dr. The Emergency Task Force (ETF) responded to the building to assist the officers that were already there. The police were unable to contact the man. At 12:52 p.m. ETF officers entered the apartment. Around the same time the body of a man was located on the ground outside of the building.

The SIU has assigned two field investigators and two forensic identification technicians to probe the circumstances surrounding this occurrence.

All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
