SIU Called after 21-year-old Man Injured in Fall from Toronto Apartment Building

Toronto, ON (26 May, 2016) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the grave injuries suffered by a 21-year-old man at an apartment building near Bloor Street and Mount Pleasant Road in Toronto.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • Around noon on May 26, Toronto Police received a call from a man in distress.
  • 51 Division officers attended the roof of an apartment building at 77 Huntley Street.  Emergency Task Force officers also attended the roof of that building.
  • Shortly after that, a man fell from the roof.
  • The man was rushed to St. Michael’s Hospital, where he is undergoing surgery.    
    
The SIU has designated six witness officers in this matter.

Five investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
