SIU Concludes Investigation into Toronto Shooting

TORONTO (24 December, 2007) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing its investigation into the injury sustained by a 17-year-old Toronto male on December 21, 2007.

At 8:45 p.m. the Toronto Police Service (TPS) was called to a Shoppers Drug Mart on Keele St. in response a robbery in progress. A male fled the scene prior to the police arriving. He was later located by a member of the TPS in a laneway in the area of Keele St. south of St. Clair. During his interaction with the officer he was shot. The male was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The SIU has assigned four field investigators and three forensic identification technicians to probe the circumstances surrounding this occurrence.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
