SIU Completes Probe into North Bay Man's Injuries

TORONTO (20 December, 2007) --- Two investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) along with an SIU forensic identification technician (FIT) are probing the circumstances surrounding the injuries to a 28-year-old North Bay man last Saturday.

At 2:37 p.m. December 15, 2007, the North Bay Police Service was at a Main St. West address regarding a disturbance call. As a result of the investigation the officers attempted to arrest a man. During the arrest a physical altercation took place between the officers and the man. The man suffered head injuries and was taken to hospital where he was admitted for treatment.

The SIU investigators are interested in talking to the driver of a pick up truck who was seen in the area at the time of the arrest, or to anyone else who may have witnessed the incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact call the lead investigator at the SIU at 1 800 787 8529 extension #2293.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
