SIU Investigates Incident in Peterborough County

Case Number: 07-PCD-246

TORONTO (9 December, 2007) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances of an incident in which two people have died in Peterborough County.

Earlier this morning, Durham Regional Police Service officers were following a silver Acura SUV in relation to an attempted homicide that occurred in London. At approximately 4:45 a.m., Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers from the Peterborough County detachment were called to assist as the SUV traveled north on Highway #115 into the OPP's Peterborough County area.

The SUV went over a police spike belt south of Hwy #7A and continued traveling northbound on Hwy #115. Shortly afterwards, the driver of the SUV lost control and went into a ditch. OPP officers approached the car and found there were two people inside the car. Both of them appeared to be suffering from fatal gunshot wounds.

Eight SIU investigators are investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths to determine what role, if any, the police played. SIU investigators are in the process of confirming the identification of the male driver and female passenger. The investigation is continuing.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
