SIU Updates Shooting in Malton

TORONTO (24 November, 2007) --- Seven investigators and four forensic identification technicians from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are probing the circumstances of a shooting that occurred involving the Peel Regional Police (PRP).

The SIU was notified that at about 4:55 p.m. this evening, four PRP officers responded to a domestic dispute call at a home on Delmonte Crescent in Malton. The officers found the man they were looking for outside a convenience store at 4369 Brandon Gate Drive. The officers were involved in a confrontation with the man inside the store and shots were fired by the police. The man was struck in the chest and is being treated at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. He is in critical condition.

There is no further information available at this time.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
