SIU Investigates Death in Toronto
Case Number: 07-TCD-236
The SIU was notified that at approximately 7:38 a.m. there was a single vehicle rollover on the southbound Don Valley Parkway north of Don Mills Rd. The driver of the rolled vehicle fled the area on foot and ran northeast across the Parkway and into a ravine.
Toronto Police Service (TPS) officers located the driver and during the arrest an altercation occurred. The man was eventually taken into custody. A short time later the man went into medical distress. He was taken to Sunnybrook Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
A post mortem will be conducted on Monday November 19, 2007
The man's name will not be released at this time pending notification of next-of-kin.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
