SIU Concludes Investigation into Thunder Bay Fatality

TORONTO (6 November, 2007) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a woman on Highway 17 east of Thunder Bay late last evening.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) - Thunder Bay, advised the SIU that at 11:00 p.m., Monday November 5, 2007, two OPP officers responded to an alleged theft call. They located a female pedestrian on the side of Highway 17 near Sunny Beach Road. While the officers were speaking to her she stepped into the roadway and was struck by a passing vehicle. The officers were not injured.

She was taken to Thunder Bay Hospital for treatment. She later succumbed to her injuries.

This investigation is in its preliminary stages therefore there is no additional information available at this time.

The SIU has two field investigators, a Forensic Identification Technician (FIT) and an Accident Reconstructionist on scene to investigate the circumstances of this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
