Case Number: 07-TFI-194

TORONTO (19 September, 2007) --- This incident started at approximately 1:22 a.m. when Toronto Police Service officers responded to an armed robbery call in the area of Winchester and Sumach Streets. At approximately 1:31 a.m., an officer located the car believed to be involved in the robbery and followed it northbound on Yonge Street.

Numerous officers pursued the green Ford Tempo as it traveled eastbound on Highway 401 to Morningside. The pursuit continued onto Ellesmere and ended when the Ford Tempo collided with a guardrail.

One of the men in the car ran into a nearby park and was arrested a short time later. He has been identified as 20-year-old Darren Wickens. The other man remained inside the car. His identify has not been confirmed.

Seven officers approached the car. There was a confrontation between the officers and the man inside of the car and shots were fired by the police. Toronto's Emergency Task Force unit arrived and officers eventually removed the man from the car.

The man was suffering from a serious head injury and was taken to hospital where he is in critical condition. Investigators have not yet been able to confirm with doctors the nature of the injury and how it was caused.
