SIU Investigates Shooting in Toronto

TORONTO (4 September, 2007) --- The TPS advised the SIU that at 10:09 p.m., Monday September 3, 2007, two officers in a police car pursued a Honda automobile from Shuter Street to Dundas St. The pursued car turned east on Dundas St. In the area of River St. there was at least one shot fired by the officers. The driver of the pursued car, who was by himself, was struck by a shot.

The driver was taken to hospital and is undergoing surgery.

This investigation is in its preliminary stages therefore there is no additional information available at this time.

The SIU has assigned six field investigators and three forensic technicians to investigate the circumstances of this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
