SIU Investigates Long Sault Vehicle Death

The SIU was notified that shortly after 3:30 a.m. this morning, OPP officers were called to investigate a noise complaint at a residence in Long Sault. While there, the officers' attention was attracted to man who got on a motorcycle and rode north towards Moulinette Rd. The officers got into their marked cruiser and began driving north on Moulinette Rd. Approximately one kilometre north of Highway 401, the officers came upon the motorcycle, which had overturned off the roadway. The rider, 29-year-old Jason Lacombe, was taken to hospital by paramedics but has been pronounced dead.
The SIU has assigned three investigators, three forensic identification technicians and a collision reconstructionist to investigate this incident. SIU investigators are en route to Long Sault and will begin processing the scene this morning.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
