SIU Concludes Death Investigation in Renfrew

TORONTO (11 June, 2007) --- Five investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are probing the circumstances of the death of a 67-year-old Renfrew man.

On June 10, 2007, at approximately 7:00 a.m., Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) from the Renfrew detachment responded to a domestic call at a home on South McNaughton Road. Officers arrived and saw a woman outside of the home. They brought her to a safe location and learned that her estranged husband was barricaded inside the home with a rifle. OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT) officers arrived and secured a perimeter around the home. At approximately 12:00 p.m., officers entered the home and found the man suffering from what appeared to be a fatal gunshot wound.

The man's identity is not being released at this time.

SIU investigators are probing what role, if any, the police played in the circumstances surrounding the man's death. Investigators will be attending the man's autopsy today in Kingston. The investigation is continuing.

All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
