SIU Terminates Investigation into Injury Sustained by Youth in London

Case Number: 17-OCI-327

Mississauga, ON (6 December, 2017) ---
The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Tony Loparco, has terminated an investigation into the serious injury sustained by a youth male earlier this month in London.

At approximately 4 a.m. on Thursday, November 9, 2017, London Police Service officers attended a residence in the area of Commissioners Road West and Viscount Road in response to information that the youth was assaulting a woman. Upon learning that police had arrived, the youth ran from the residence. As a result of jumping over a fence, he sustained a serious injury.
Director Loparco said, “Based on the evidence, it is clear the injury was not caused by police. As such, this investigation has been terminated.”

The SIU is an independent civilian agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
