SIU Investigates Toronto Shooting
Case Number: 07-TFI-091
The shooting occurred inside an apartment building at 4301 Kingston Road at approximately 2:24 a.m.
Preliminary information from the investigation indicates that five TPS officers responded to a call for assistance from one of the tenants in the building who had reportedly been threatened by a neighbour. The officers entered the apartment building were involved in an altercation with a 52-year-old man. One officer discharged his gun and struck the man in the hand. He is at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre where he is being treated for his non-life threatening injuries.
As part of the investigation, one subject officer and five witness officers have been designated. Forensic identification technicians are continuing to process the scene and collecting evidentiary items. SIU investigators are canvassing the building for witnesses and appealing to anyone who has any information in relation to this incident to contact the Unit at 416-622-2293.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
