SIU Investigates Fatal Shooting in Renfrew

Preliminary information from the investigation indicates that OPP officers responded to a family disturbance call at 90 Bonnechere Street North. Shortly after their arrival, two officers were involved with a confrontation with a 24-year-old man outside of the home. One officer fired his gun and struck the man. He was transported to Renfrew Victoria Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The man's identity is not being released at this time.
No one else was injured as a result of this incident.
SIU investigators have designated one subject and four witness officers from the OPP. Forensic identification technicians are processing the shooting scene and investigators are appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident or has any information to contact the SIU at 1-800-787-8529 x 1935.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
