SIU Concludes Investigation in Springwater Township

TORONTO (29 March, 2007) --- Investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) have been dispatched to investigate a police shooting that occurred this afternoon in the Community of Phelpston in Springwater Township.

As a result, a 43-year-old man sustained very serious gunshot wounds and is currently being treated at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) notified the SIU that at around 3:00 p.m. today, OPP officers responded to a domestic dispute call at a residence on Phelpston Road and confronted the male individual. It was reported that there was a confrontation between the man and the officers, resulting in one officer discharging his gun. The man was struck in the abdomen area and transported to Royal Victoria Hospital and then to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre where he is in critical condition.

Three investigators and three forensic identification technicians have been assigned to the case. The scene has been secured for forensic processing by the SIU and investigators will be embarking on interviews with witnesses.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
