SIU Concludes Investigation in Halton Hills

TORONTO (5 March, 2007) --- Nine investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are investigating the circumstances of a collision that has left one man dead and three people injured.

The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) notified the SIU that at approximately 10:44 a.m. today, the HRPS received a call about a collision on Trafalgar Road, north of 5th Sideroad. As an officer approached the collision scene, he saw the driver of a minivan lose control on Trafalgar and roll into a ditch. The officer pulled over and, with the assistance of other motorists, assisted the two occupants in the minivan. There were white-out conditions and several motorists had exited their cars to help those who had been involved in collisions.

In the meantime, the driver of a car traveling northbound on Trafalgar struck three people.

Two men were taken to Georgetown General Hospital and one has died as a result of his injuries. Two women were also taken to area hospitals. The extent of their injuries is not known at this time.

SIU investigators are probing the nature and extent of police involvement in all the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision. Anyone who witnessed this incident is asked to contact the lead investigator at 416-622-2150 or 1-800-787-8529 x 2150.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
