SIU Concludes Investigation in Toronto

TORONTO (1 March, 2007) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances of a shooting that occurred involving the Toronto Police Service (TPS). The shooting took place at about 2:40 p.m. today at 3227 Eglinton Avenue East in Scarborough.

Preliminary information from the investigation indicates that at approximately 2:14 p.m., two TPS officers responded to an unknown trouble call at a store in Markington Square Plaza. The officers arrived and became involved in an altercation with a 24-year-old male customer. Two additional officers arrived to assist. The confrontation between the police officers and the man continued and one officer discharged his firearm. The man was struck in the chest area and transported to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. He is in stable condition and his injuries are not considered to be life-threatening at this time.

Two officers were also taken to hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

SIU forensic identification technicians are continuing to process the scene and interviews with civilian witnesses are also ongoing.
