SIU Concludes Investigation into Sarnia Death

TORONTO (26 February, 2007) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating the circumstances of the death of a 61-year-old man in Sarnia.

The SIU was notified that on February 24, 2007, at about 9:20 p.m., Sarnia Police Service officers responded to a domestic complaint on Vidal St. South. The 61-year-old male was arrested and taken to the police station, where he went into medical distress. He was transported to Bluewater Health, Mitton Street Site, where he was pronounced dead.

A post mortem examination is scheduled for today at the London Health Sciences Centre, University Campus.

The SIU has assigned five investigators to the investigation. The SIU has designated three witness officers and three subject officers from the Sarnia Police Service. As part of the probe, SIU investigators have interviewed police and civilian witnesses.

The investigation is continuing.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
