SIU Investigates Police Shooting in Toronto

The incident started at about 2:10 a.m. this morning when the driver of a Red Neon vehicle allegedly refused to stop for police. A description of the car was broadcast to officers.
A short time later, an officer in a marked cruiser observed the Neon in the area of Parliament and Gerrard and followed it to King Street. The Neon was traveling westbound on King when it collided with an unmarked police cruiser near King and Bay Streets. Two officers exited their unmarked cruiser and confronted the two occupants in the Neon. As a result of the confrontation, both officers discharged their firearms.
The driver and passenger in the Neon were struck and are at St. Michael's Hospital where they are being treated for gunshot injuries. They are in stable condition.
SIU investigators have designated two subject and eight witness officers as part of the probe. They are appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact the Unit at 416-622-1925 or 1-800-787-8529 x1925.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
