Injury in Orleans Due to Man Stabbing Self ; SIU Terminates Investigation

Case Number: 18-OCI-135

Mississauga, ON (15 June, 2018) ---
The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Tony Loparco, has terminated an investigation into the serious injury sustained by a 43-year-old man in April of 2018.

At approximately 5:30 p.m. on April 30, 2018, Ottawa Police Service officers attended a residence in relation to a domestic situation. In the backyard of the home, officers located a man hiding under a deck. The man informed officers that he had stabbed himself in the chest and that he wanted to die. The man was transported by ambulance to hospital where he was treated for a stab wound.

Director Loparco said, “Based on the evidence, the man’s injury was entirely self-inflicted. As such, I have terminated the investigation into this incident.”

The SIU is an independent civilian agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
