Mississauga (20 September, 2005) --- Eight investigators, including four forensic identification technicians, from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are probing the circumstances surrounding the shooting death of a man at the Port Credit Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

At approximately 11:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 18, 2005, an OPP officer was attempting to lodge a man into a holding cell at the Port Credit Detachment. A struggle between the officer and the man ensued. Assistance was requested, another officer arrived and shots were fired from a police firearm. The man suffered a fatal gunshot wound.

The identity of the deceased is not being released pending his positive identification and notification of next-of-kin. A post mortem examination is scheduled today.

The SIU has designated two subject officers and four witness officers from the OPP. The investigation is actively continuing.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
