SIU Investigating Shooting in Wingham

Mississauga, ON (7 September, 2018) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding a shooting that occurred in Wingham today.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • Shortly after midnight on September 7, 2018, an Ontario Provincial Police officer with the Wingham detachment stopped a vehicle on Whitechurch Street.
  • One of the occupants of the vehicle – a 30-year-old man - exited the vehicle. The driver remained in the vehicle and fled the scene.
  • There was an interaction between the 30-year-old man and the officer, and the officer discharged his firearm. The man was struck.
  • He was transported to hospital for treatment.

Five investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to this incident. At this time, one subject officer from the OPP has been designated. Additionally, four witness officers from the OPP and one witness officer from Wingham Police Service have been designated.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
