SIU Appeals for Witnesses to an Incident at Octoberfest Celebrations

TORONTO (17 October, 2008) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is appealing for witnesses to an incident involving officers of the Waterloo Regional Police Service during Octoberfest celebrations in Kitchener.

On Sunday October 12, 2008 between 12:15 a.m. and 12:30 a.m., security staff at the Queensmount Arena at 1650 Queens Blvd. ejected a man, who had been involved in an altercation with two other patrons. When police arrived to arrest the man, a struggle ensued and he was handcuffed and taken into custody. The 25-year-old Cambridge man was charged with public intoxication.

The SIU is investigating the circumstances surrounding injuries sustained by this man. Anyone, who may have witnessed these events - both inside and outside the Queensmount Arena - or has any information about the incidents, to contact the Unit at 1-800-787-8529 or 416-622-0748, extension 1867.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
