SIU Concludes Investigation into Shooting Death in London

TORONTO (1 October, 2008) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a London man.

On Tuesday September 30, 2008 at approximately 4:15 p.m., the London Police Service was called to a home on Millbank Drive about a distraught man. Shortly after arriving, officers heard a single gunshot coming from the backyard. During their search, they found the body of a 50-year-old man inside a garden shed. A shotgun was also recovered.

A post-mortem conducted this afternoon has determined the cause of death as a gunshot wound to the head. No suspects are being sought by the London Police Service in connection with this case; foul play is not suspected.

The SIU has designated two subject officers and four witness officers for interviews.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
