SIU Investigating Fatal Collision in Pickering

- At approximately 9:30 a.m. on December 1, 2018, an Ontario Provincial Police officer was conducting speed enforcement on eastbound Highway 407, west of Brock Road.
- The officer observed a vehicle traveling eastbound on Highway 407 and began to follow it.
- The vehicle exited the highway and went southbound onto Brock Road.
- A short time later, the officer came across the vehicle. It had been involved in a collision with a Purolator courier truck.
- The driver of the vehicle which was being investigated was pronounced dead at the scene. The 36-year-old male driver of the Purolator was transported to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre where he remains in serious but stable condition.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
