SIU Investigates Injury in Windsor

TORONTO (25 April, 2008) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has assigned four investigators and three forensic investigators to probe the circumstances surrounding the injuries sustained by a 21-year-old woman during a police investigation early this morning in Windsor.

On April 25, 2008, at 1:36 a.m. officers from the Windsor Police Service (WPS) were at an apartment building on Lauzon Rd. They were investigating a robbery that occurred earlier at a Mac's Milk store. During the investigation an officer located a woman on the ground outside of the apartment building.

The woman was taken to Hotel Dieu for treatment and admitted.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
