SIU Concludes Investigation into Bramalea Shooting

TORONTO (27 March, 2008) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has assigned seven investigators and three forensic investigators to probe a police shooting that occurred at 6:00 p.m. in Bramalea last evening.

At 6:33 p.m. March 26, 2008, the Peel Regional Police (PRP) advised the SIU that, a number of their officers responded to a disturbance call on Alaskan Summit Cr. in Bramalea. When an officer arrived he saw a man wielding a baseball bat. The officer confronted the man. After some interaction the officer fired his pistol. The man sustained a single gunshot wound to his abdomen.

22-year-old Nirmal Bagri was taken to Brampton Civic Hospital by ambulance where he underwent surgery. Mr. Bagri is recovering in hospital.

The SIU has designated one PRP officer as a subject officer and four as witness officers.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
