SIU Investigates Shooting in East Toronto

TORONTO (25 March, 2008) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has assigned five investigators and four forensic investigators to probe a police shooting that occurred in east Toronto this afternoon.

At 3:52 p.m. today the Toronto Police Service (TPS) advised the SIU that a number of TPS officers responded to an alleged robbery at 3:15 p.m. at a Royal Bank branch located on Sheppard Ave. west of Markham Rd.

The officers were on scene when a man left the bank holding something in each hand. The man interacted with officers that were on the scene. During this interaction an officer discharged his firearm. The man was struck by at least one bullet and collapsed on the ground.

The man was taken to Sunnybrook hospital by ambulance. His injuries are considered life threatening.

The man's identity is not known at this time.

The SIU has designated one TPS officer as a subject officer and eight as witness officers.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
