SIU Appeal for Witnesses

TORONTO (28 February, 2008) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is presently investigating an incident that occurred just before midnight on February 19, 2008. Officers of the York Regional Police Service (YRPS) pulled over a car that had been travelling southbound on Highway 400 just south of the Kirby Sideroad in Vaughan.

When the car stopped a man got out of the car and ran eastbound across the southbound lanes, through the median, across the northbound lanes and up an embankment. YRPS officers gave chase and caught up to the man. The man was taken into custody for an alleged criminal offence. YRPS officers took the man back across the highway to the west side where the car he had been in was stopped.

SIU investigators are interested in speaking with anyone who may have witnessed all or part of this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
