SIU Investigates Collision in London

TORONTO (17 August, 2005) --- Nine investigators, including three forensic identification technicians from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), are probing the circumstances surrounding a single motor vehicle collision that occurred earlier this afternoon.

The London Police Service (LPS) notified the SIU that at about 1:45 p.m., LPS officers responded to a robbery call at White Oaks Mall on Wellington Road. The police became involved in a pursuit of a car as it fled from the mall. The pursuit continued eastbound on Highway 402 until approximately 2:05 p.m. when the pursued car lost control and rolled into a ditch between Colonel Talbot and Wonderland Roads. Police arrived at the collision scene and found a man suffering fatal injuries and three other men who were seriously injured. The injured men were transported to hospital where a second man succumbed to his injuries.

The SIU is investigating police activity during this incident and the circumstances surrounding the collision. The SIU is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact the Unit at 416-622-1988 or 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
