Case Number: 09-OVI-289

Mississauga (17 November, 2009) --- Two investigators and two forensic investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are probing the circumstances surrounding an injury sustained by a 20-year-old man in Sudbury early this morning.

The SIU was notified that at 2:56 a.m. on November 17, 2009, two Greater Sudbury Police Service officers in a marked vehicle were attempting to stop a vehicle on Bancroft Drive for allegedly driving dangerously. A short time later, the vehicle rolled over in the area of 1159 Bancroft Drive. The driver of the vehicle was taken to St. Joseph Health Centre for treatment of an injury to his ankle. He has been discharged from hospital, and is in police custody.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
