No Charges to Issue in Relation Man’s Arrest Outside Bar in Collingwood

Mississauga, ON (28 April, 2020) ---
At approximately 1 a.m. on July 28, 2019, Ontario Provincial Police officers attended a bar in Collingwood and arrested a 25-year-old man under the Liquor Licence Act. The man was transported to hospital and diagnosed with a broken nose. The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, has determined the officers conducted themselves lawfully throughout the interaction. Accordingly, there are no grounds to proceed with criminal charges in this case and the file is closed.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
