SIU Concludes Investigation into Mono Township Death

Mississauga (12 September, 2009) --- Three investigators and two forensic investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are probing the circumstances surrounding the death of a 42-year-old man that occurred in Mono Township on Saturday, September 12.

At 5:50 a.m. this morning, the Orangeville Police Service (OPS) reported to the SIU that on Friday, September 11, just before midnight, officers responded to a reported domestic dispute at a residence in Orangeville. A short time later, police returned to the residence after learning that a 39-year-old female occupant of the home had been shot. The OPS then went to a second residence in the Mono Township, and requested assistance from the Ontario Provincial Police. A deceased male was found in the home.

The female found in the Orangeville home was airlifted to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto. Her injuries proved fatal.

Investigators are appealing for anyone who may have information regarding this incident to contact the Unit at 416-622-0748 or 1-800-787-8529.

All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
