SIU Probes Incident in Ottawa

Case Number: 09-OCI-103

Mississauga (10 June, 2009) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has sent two investigators to Ottawa to probe the circumstances of an incident that occurred yesterday.

On Tuesday May 12, 2009 an off-duty member of the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) was involved in a physical confrontation with a member of the public at the Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport. The citizen was injured and as a result the SIU has invoked its mandate.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
