SIU Investigates Incident in Ottawa Area

Mississauga (1 June, 2009) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding a motor vehicle collision that occurred in the Ottawa area late last evening.

The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) reported that at 10:25 p.m. they responded to a call on Cleroux Street (Blackburn Hamlet), Ottawa. As an officer arrived at the call a Pontiac car left the scene. The officer attempted to stop the car to investigate the driver. The driver did not stop and a pursuit ensued.
The driver lost control of the car on Innes Road. The car left the road and struck a parked vehicle and then a house. The 19 year old Ottawa man driving the car was taken to the Ottawa Civic Hospital for treatment of his injuries..

The SIU has assigned three investigators, two forensic investigators along with a collision reconstructionist to probe the circumstances surrounding this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
