SIU Investigates Fatal Police Shooting in Brantford

Mississauga (26 August, 2010) --- Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting of a man by the Brantford Police Service (BPS).

The BPS contacted the SIU and advised that officers had responded to a call at a residence on Sympatica Crescent on Wednesday, August 25th, 2010 at approximately 9:51 PM. The officers had interaction with an 18-year-old male outside and then inside the residence.

During the interaction inside the residence, an officer fired at least one shot that struck the man. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Six investigators and four forensic investigators are investigating this incident. Anyone who may have information regarding this case is asked to contact the Unit at 416-622-0748 or 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
