Appeal for Witnesses to Mississauga Custody Injury

Mississauga (19 May, 2010) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is appealing for witnesses to an interaction that occurred in Mississauga yesterday evening.

On May 10, 2010, at approximately 8:00 p.m., officers with the Peel Regional Police Service responded to a residence on Wiseman Court. They had an interaction with a man, and during his arrest he sustained injuries.

Six investigators and one forensic investigator from the SIU are probing the circumstances surrounding this case. The Lead Investigator is interested in speaking with any member of the public who may have witnessed this incident. Anyone with information is asked to call the SIU at 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
