SIU Looking for Witnesses to Oshawa Collision

TORONTO (29 June, 2005) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is looking for witnesses to a collision that occurred involving the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS).

At approximately 5:20 p.m. on June 20, 2005, a marked DRPS cruiser collided with a white Kia Magentis car at the intersection of Ritson Road North and Rossland Road East in Oshawa. The driver of the Kia Magentis, a 76-year-old Oshawa woman, suffered a serious neck injury as a result of the collision.

The SIU is probing the actions of the involved police officer.

SIU investigators believe that a young man may have witnessed the collision and are interested in speaking with him. Anyone who witnessed this incident is asked to contact the SIU at 416-622-1935 or 1-800-787-8529 x1935.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
