SIU Closes Investigation into Oshawa Vehicle Death

Mississauga (24 March, 2010) --- Six investigators and three forensic investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are probing the circumstances surrounding a motor vehicle collision in Oshawa that occurred this afternoon.

The SIU was notified that at approximately 2:17 p.m. on March 24, 2010, a motorcycle being driven by a 31-year-old Oshawa man collided with another vehicle in the intersection of Harmony Road North and Adelaide Avenue East in Oshawa. The motorcyclist was taken to Lakeridge Health where he succumbed to his injuries. He was pronounced dead at 3:03 p.m. The 50-year-old driver of the other vehicle was taken to hospital with minor injuries. At the time of the collision, Durham Regional Police Service officers were conducting radar in the vicinity.

Investigators are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact the Unit at 416-622-2038.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
