Update SIU Continues Investigation into Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision in Scarborough

Mississauga (15 February, 2010) --- Six investigators and four forensic investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are continuing to probe the circumstances surrounding a fatal motor vehicle collision that has left a 26-year-old woman dead.

The SIU was notfied that at approximately 12:10 a.m. on February 15, 2010, the Toronto Police Service (TPS) responded to a break and enter call at a Midland Avenue business in Scarborough. A short time later, police began following a vehicle south on Midland Avenue, and then westbound on Lawrence Avenue. Near the intersection of Lawrence Avenue and Pharmacy Avenue, the vehicle being followed collided with another vehicle. Five people from the civillian vehicle were taken to hospital, including 26-year-old Mahboba (Sarah) Attayee, who was pronounced dead. One person from the car being followed was also taken to hospital.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
