SIU Investigates Death in Toronto

Case Number: 11-TCD-013

Mississauga (23 January, 2011) --- Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding the death of a man which occurred this morning. The SIU was notified by the Toronto Police Service (TPS) at 12:40pm of the following:
  • A man was apprehended by security staff at the No Frills located at Lawrence Avenue and Markham Road for an alleged criminal offence;
  • The male was taken into custody by a TPS officer who was in the vicinity;
  • While being processed by the officer, the man went into medical distress;
  • Toronto EMS and Toronto Fire Department responded;
  • The man was transported to Scarborough General by ambulance, where he was pronounced dead;
  • The SIU has designated one subject and two witness officers;
  • A post mortem will be conducted in Toronto on January 24, 2011
Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to this investigation. Anyone who may have information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Unit at 416-622-1925 or 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
