SIU Investigating Death of Man in Wellington North

Case Number: 22-PCD-306   

Mississauga, ON (2 December, 2022) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 47-year-old man in Wellington North on the weekend.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 10 p.m. on November 26, 2022, Ontario Provincial Police officers responded to a home on Concession Road 7 after receiving a report of a man, who lived in the home, causing damage inside.  
  • Upon arrival, officers set up a perimeter around the residence. 
  • Multiple attempts were made to contact the man.
  • After several hours, the Tactics and Rescue Unit entered the home and located the man, deceased, in the bathroom. 

Two investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case. At this time, two witness officials have been designated and interviewed.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
