SIU Investigation in Barrie Continues

Mississauga (24 March, 2011) --- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing its investigation into an incident on Saturday March 19, 2011 in Barrie.

The SIU investigation to date has determined the following;

• On March 19, 2011 the Barrie Police Service (BPS) arrested a man in the area of the bus depot in downtown Barrie;

• He was lodged in a cell;

• At 11:00 p.m. he was found to be in medical distress; and

• He was transported to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie for treatment and eventually admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

On Tuesday March 22, 2011, 38-year-old Jason Snow of Barrie passed away in hospital.

A post mortem is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Friday March 25, 2011.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
