SIU INVESTIGATES FIREARM INJURY IN HANOVER

Mississauga (28 March, 2011) --- The Hanover Police Service (HPS) contacted the SIU at 6:24 a.m. today and reported the following:
• At 0516 hrs HPS was called to a residence on Tenth Street above the Forum Bar for a disturbance involving a knife;
• HPS officers requested the assistance of the West Grey Police Service and the OPP Walkerton Detachment;
• While on scene members of the HPS and OPP interacted with a 53-year-old man;
• During the interaction the Taser was deployed by an OPP officer.;
• An HPS officer discharged his service pistol at least once;
• The 53-year-old man was transported to the Hanover Hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound; and
• The male is in stable condition.
The SIU investigation is ongoing. Five investigators and three forensic investigators from the unit are currently assigned to probe the circumstances of this incident

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
