SIU Investigates Shooting in Sudbury

TORONTO (20 May, 2005) --- Six investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are in Sudbury today to probe the circumstances surrounding a shooting that occurred on May 19, 2005.

The Greater Sudbury Police Service notified the SIU that at approximately 10:40 p.m., officers responded to a domestic dispute call at a home on Norma Street. The officers were involved in a confrontation outside the home with a 62-year-old man, which resulted in the man being shot in the chest area. He was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital and is undergoing surgery for his injuries.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
