SIU Concludes Investigation into Woman’s Arrest in Mississauga

Case Number: 23-OCI-042

Mississauga, ON (12 June, 2023) ---
In the early morning hours of February 12, 2023, a vehicle drove into a ditch between Mavis Road and the on-ramp to westbound Highway 401 from southbound Mavis Road. When both vehicle occupants admitted to drinking to a Peel Regional Police officer, a breath test was administered. The male driver blew over the legal limit and was arrested. The 44-year-old female passenger became upset and began to walk away from the officer down the ramp towards the westbound lanes of the highway, falling twice in the process. The officer caught up with the woman and placed her under arrest with the assistance of a firefighter, who had also responded to the site of the collision. The woman was transported in ambulance to hospital and diagnosed with a fractured right thumb. On his assessment of the evidence, SIU Director Joseph Martino determined there were no reasonable grounds to believe that an officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the woman’s arrest and injury. There was no basis for proceeding with criminal charges in this case, and the file has been closed.
