SIU Investigating After Halton Police Officers Fatally Shoot Man in Oakville

Mississauga, ON (2 March, 2024) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a man was shot and killed by two Halton Regional Police Service officers early this morning at an Oakville residence.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 1:40 a.m., officers went to a residence on Stanbury Road after receiving a 911 call about a stabbing.
  • Officers responded, located the man inside the residence and shot the man. 
  • He was pronounced deceased at the scene. 
  • Another male was located with serious injuries and is in hospital.
Six investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. The post-mortem is scheduled for tomorrow. Two subject officials and four witness officials have been designated at this time.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
