SIU Investigating Alleged Sexual Assault in Toronto

Mississauga (6 July, 2011) --- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding an alleged sexual assault of a 23 year-old Toronto man. On July 2, 2011, Toronto Police Service (TPS) notified the SIU regarding a complaint of a sexual nature against one of its officers.
The alleged incident occurred on July 1, 2011, shortly before the fireworks display at Ashbridge’s Bay. TPS reported that the male was arrested in relation to an interaction with other civilians in the area of Lakeshore Road East and Winner’s Circle.
The SIU is appealing for witnesses in relation to the arrest which took place on Boardwalk drive west of Winner’s Circle at approximately 9:40pm. The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
