SIU Concludes Investigation into Brantford ARWEN Discharge

Mississauga, ON (16 October, 2024) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the discharge of an Anti-Riot Weapon ENfield (ARWEN) last night at a 51-year-old man in Brantford.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 1:45 p.m. on October 15, 2024, members of the Enforcement Office attended a residence in the area of Brant Avenue and Henrietta Street to issue an eviction notice.
  • When the members observed the person of interest with an edged weapon, they called the Brantford Police Service for assistance.
  • Officers arrived and attempted negotiations with the man.
  • Several hours later, inside the residence, one officer discharged his ARWEN multiple times at the man, and the man was struck.
  • He was arrested and transported to hospital for treatment of a serious injury.
Two investigators and one forensic investigator from the SIU have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at: https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php
